Audience Control in Moments: Share What You Want with Whom You Want
Worried about who sees your posts? In Moments, each post and story has its own audience. Here's how to make the most of it.
One of the most common concerns when using social media is knowing who will see what you post. Many users have uncomfortable experiences sharing photos or stories, whether due to embarrassment or not wanting certain contacts to view their content. This is where the moments app shines with its unique approach: each post can have its own audience.
Levels of Audience Control
In Moments, you have six different levels of control over who can see each of your posts:
- Everyone: Anyone can access your content.
- Mutuals: Only those who follow you can see your posts.
- Best Friends: A closed list of people you trust.
- Custom: You can choose specific people without the need to create saved lists.
- Custom List: Create groups like “Family” or “Friday After Party” to share specifically with them.
- Only Me: Ideal for a private visual diary where no one else can see what you share.
You can save default settings for posts and stories separately, which is very practical if you have different groups you want to target with your content.
Practical Strategies for Using Moments
Here are some everyday situations where you can effectively apply this feature:
Family Dinner:
You have a special family dinner and decide to share some photos. Instead of making them visible to all your followers (who might not be interested), you use the custom list called “Family.” This way, only they will enjoy those special moments without worrying about other less-close contacts.
Nights Out with Friends:
A few days after that dinner, you go out with friends to a party. You could create a list called “Friday After Party,” ensuring that pictures from the after-party are seen only by that specific group without flooding the general feed with private or compromising images.
Key Differences Between Moments and Instagram
While both are popular social media platforms, there are significant differences between Moments and other apps like Instagram when it comes to controlling shared content. While Instagram primarily relies on broad options like public/private/close friends, Moments allows you to decide the audience on a post-by-post basis. This means greater freedom and privacy when sharing personal or sensitive experiences.
Additional Features: Echoes and Story Chains
Taking advantage of Echoes is another great way to add context to your shared moments. These geolocated posts allow limited interactions for a set period (24 hours), making experiences even more personal and reciprocal among mutuals. Plus, you can set up Story Chains — a fresh format where multiple users can contribute to the same story over a specified time — creating joint memories without mixing unwanted audiences.
